Melco/Dos Format

Dos format designs are Dos based files that can be seen on the computer in Windows Explorer. The files include Dos condensed and Dos expanded designs and others.

Melco format (language) refers to Dos condensed and Dos expanded designs that are written to a "Melco formatted disk". The disk of designs is used on specific commercial embroidery machines that read Melco format.

The major difference is that Dos condensed and Dos expanded data files can be viewed in Windows Explorer, whereas, Melco format designs are only on a Melco formatted disk and they can only be worked with or viewed within embroidery programs / equipment that read Melco formatted disks.

To elaborate further, the Melco formatted disk has a special 'header' or 'label' on the disk and the specific Melco formatting of the disk is done within certain programs / equipment that allow formatting to Melco. The procedure would work something like this. A Dos condensed or Dos expanded design is opened in an embroidery program. Insert a double density floppy disk into the disk drive. Next, go to FILE, EXPORT, the EXPORT dialogue box appears. Place the dot in front of MELCO, click the FORMAT button, a header or label is added to the disk making it a "Melco formatted disk"; add a file name, click the EXPORT button. The design is written to the Melco formatted disk. In Windows Explorer, it is impossible to do a directory of the Melco formatted disk to find out which designs are on the disk. A directory of the disk and opening designs from the Melco formatted disk is accomplished from within the embroidery program / equipment that reads Melco format. To open a design from a "Melco formatted disk", put the disk into the disk drive, click FILE, IMPORT, the IMPORT dialogue box appears. Click the DIRECTORY button. A list of the designs on the disk appears. Highlight any one, the file name goes into the FILE NAME window. Click the IMPORT button. The design opens on screen.
